It would be beneficial to have a formative quiz so i know what the question is like and i can practice as 2 hours isn't enough time for me to figure out this coding as I have never done it before
Really helpful! But I am a bit confused how to find out the most number of rows as the question in the formative says it was Bovidae 66 whereas I got Bovidae 10 after following the instructions in the first video?
It would be helpful if the videos matched the writing and if the videos covered common mistakes or ways that the code might appear differently because I have noticed that different university computers can present things differently. The explanation for how each piece of code works was good but maybe there could be a link to information on how this knowledge could be transferred to other pieces of code.
I don't understand the point or benefit to splicing data and sometimes just have to copy paste some code as I struggle to write it out or don't understand it at all
this week was a breath of fresh air after last week, as someone who didnt do alevel maths or stats, last week was a huge learning curve, it took me days to complete, but this week i found easy to follow, some of the equations and stuff to do with the end of 4.3 where quite difficult to understand but im sure it will get more apparent as we move forwards, thank you!!
I enjoyed this one, somewhat difficult but really interesting. Personally, I have more prior experience with excel than probably most, so maybe some links and references to slightly more beginner oriented videos could also be beneficial. Also on that note, this was not at all something I thought I'd be doing, so maybe advertising could help people get ahead if they struggle with this sort of thing (during the summer - prior reading/learning). Overall however I quite enjoy this!
My t-test values were coming up as 0 every time and no matter how much I change my formula or re-do the work I always end up with 0. I have had to stop the workshop after this point as I am unable to continue. i wil | I will attempt the summative quiz to the best of what I understood in today's workshop
this week felt like a huge jump from last week, and even as someone who did alevel maths and is familiar with t tests and all that, it still felt like a huge jump in difficulty. the videos are very very helpful and appreciated, definitely could not have done this assignment just through the written instructions. however maybe this chapter couldve been split into 2 to minimise how much of a jump it feels like?
very difficult work, struggled to get from 3rd video to 4th. explanations good for the rest and appreciate the videos however it was a lot to do in one session
guidance at the start was a but hard to understand, however got better after watching the videos. I am still struggling to understand how to use the R studio, however I'm sure this will better with time | thanks !!
The video and comments were both useful. I'm on Mac so it was a little tricky as you said but I managed to get it working alright, just took some trial and error. I didn't realise that in order to run the random number generator on RStudio you had to run each line and not just the end one but that was cleared up once I asked for help. Otherwise it's a good tutorial
Thought the whole QS side of this module has been ran really well and for someone who knew bits of code but not how to do anything useful I think it has all been explained really well. I think a few times the video code was different to what was in the book which confused me and or the instructions and placement of the video meant I wasn't sure which to do first. I also think it would be interesting to have an idea where the csv files are coming from or documents. What i mean is like how would someone have got that data in that format in case we wanted to in future. Loved the module though and it has made me really like coding and I will look at doing some in my spare time which I probably wouldn't have before
My favourite module of semester 1, accessible for those who want to learn the basics and for those who want to study R in more detail. Thank you for making the sessions so engaging :)
Thank you very much for all the help this year! For people like me, coding has been the hardest subject ever in high school, and still probably is, not going to lie, but you helped me be more confident when working with R and when we solve these problems. You showed your personality, which is a very big thing for me personally, and it made me enjoy these classes, even though I thought it was going to be impossible.
Thank you so much for making this module so fun! Learning how to code is an essential skill that we need to somehow learn and even though it is complicated, you have made it enjoyable. Hope you have a nice Christmas break and happy New Year!!
Thank you so much for all your support, you're the best Dr. Rob, I was wondering if you can download more videos about coding especially RStudio in your YouTube channel for who's interesting including me, I think people will love it. As I feel your videos are so much fun. AS well as, the interesting information that you provide. .
Great as ever, walk through videos are exactly the right amount of guidance and explain everything super well. The book then also allows a bit more of an independent approach I use when revisiting! Really considering looking into something like this professionally and I wouldn't have even considered it before. Thank you so much :)
As a complete beginner to coding, this is very daunting and I find alot of it very confusing but the videos are very helpful - thank you for taking the time to make the videos they are brill cheers
It was obviously a bit more difficult this week, however I found it very informative and fascinating, I always wondered how I could apply R to things like genomics.
No comments for improvement from myself, I think the chapters are very informative and understandable, coming from someone with little to no prior coding experience.
really starting to get the hang of R and much prefer it to excel. i find with excel my calculated values sometimes come out wrong and i dont know where but with code it will scream and cry that you've done something wrong.
Really loving this! Watching the videos alongside reading the text AND with my own work open makes the learning so much easier and massively helps me understand what on Earth is going on :)
I have a learning disability and I have actually used R before and found it really frustrating and still do to some extent haha. However, I really love how you've broken it down into manageable videos. At first I wasn't quite sure and the practicals felt really impersonal but it's actually been a pleasant surprise by how I'm now finally picking it up, especially with R. So thank you for that :)
the videos are super helpful and to be honest coding is such a difficult thing to teach given all the jargon and processes but having a youtube video to walk you through it really helps. I do find as a complete beginner to coding though that it is quite intimidating and difficult to know where you have gone wrong for example in summative assessments I find there's consistently something that's not quite right and I struggle to troubleshoot this by myself. really I should just come and find you in that period on a Thursday for help but alas.
The videos are great and the textbook is really accessible in it's layout. The teams call of a recorded video with no sound was bad and in the second video a bit about how to get your boxplots in numerical order would have been helpful.
You really explained why we are doing certain stats well, so thank you. However, your explanation and the written instructions did not always match up which makes it confusing. You sometimes didn't verbalise every action you were doing in the video (may add extra commas/ colons).
The videos are more helpful than the instruction as they can be quite confusing, however sometimes the quality of the video makes it hard to see what you’re doing so the instructions are a good reference to use also! Thanks
